ONOMI
ONOMI is (along with its sibling FIKTION) an experimental (yet melodic) electroacoustic music endeavor by artist and composer Gustaf Lundh, formed in 2006. While FIKTION has incorporated acoustics, lyrics, and narratives, ONOMI is by rule instrumental and mostly electronic—a mix of experimental and classical counterpoint, humming organs, field recordings, soothing noise, and not seldom reminiscent of "low-bit" videogame music.
The basis of ONOMI leans towards a concept similar to FIKTION, in that sense of transforming sensory states into sonic art taking inspiration from our aesthetic past yet always in a contemporary form and with an eye towards a unique expression of its own. BIOS (EP, 2022)
Limited Edition Vinyl 12" Transparent Disc and a link to digital version of the album. SOLD OUT
BIOS derives from the Ancient Greek words of βίος; romanized bíos meaning "life”. The EP is 25 min and contains six tracks. 01. ALARM (5,47) 02. BIOS (5,27) 03. AFTERMATH (2,11) 04. BEHIND THE CURTAINS (2,05) 05. KERNEL P. III (4,49) 06. ORBIT (5,44) BIOS expresses a duality of hope and hopelessness regarding human life and the future of our planet. Onomi’s previous release, IRJA, was a paradoxically optimistic dystopia where there were no humans, only robots. Musically, BIOS is a continuation of IRJA, mixing electronic soundscapes with elements of classical counterpoint and electro-acoustic composition. BIOS can also be interpreted as a prequel to IRJA: it is a snapshot of the critical moment where humanity still has a shot at survival. ALARM, the first track, is a wake up call from a submerged world, unsettling in its low-paced urgency. BIOS, the title track, signifies the fervor and desperate energy of life itself, as it is born, sustained, and ultimately threatened. AFTERMATH injects a hopeful melody, signifying change and adaptation, into all of the harshness and struggle. BEHIND THE CURTAINS is an intermission that takes us to a hidden cache of playfulness and human expression. KERNEL is a reworked track from the origins of ONOMI, reminding us that there is always a core, a truth, that there is always a seed from which life and change can spring. Finally, ORBIT, the final track, is an escape, a return, or perhaps a peaceful reconciliation. We know that in space there is total silence. BIOS was written and produced while suffering from severe tinnitus; thus in a sonic environment where silence had to be imagined. Onomi’s new release, Irja, could be an approximation of what this unknown future would sound like. The record itself is a collection of electronic pieces composed and recorded over the course of five years. Its seven tracks are as beautiful as they are unsettling, as melodic as they are washed out. Here, Onomi has mixed elements of classical counterpoint and electro-acoustic composition with rough electronic soundscapes, sometimes reminiscent of videogame music. Several tracks were originally composed for short films, and Irja is indeed Onomi’s most cinematic release to date. Onomi offers the following description of Irja: a sexless, artificial machine, like HAL 9000 in Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. However, unlike HAL, Irja is not antagonistic, but a friendly machine that wishes everybody well. For those brave enough to venture into this strange but friendly future, Onomi’s new album is out now in physical form as a Limited 12” 180g Red Vinyl version and in digital format on Bandcamp!creditsreleased September 7, 2019 |
